My recent paints are inspired by my trip to Cuba in 2000. Funded by a grant, the series of over-life-size paintings of young girls follow the earlier work in being multi-leveled in intellectual content. However, they are now simpler in texture and fabric. Each reflects the mixture of culture and religion that typifies Cuban childhood and reveals stereotypes all too readily embraced by most viewers. Each painting is dominated by a different color that, in turn, is reflected in the child's name: Roja, Amarilla, Violetta, Azuletta, and Bambina - pink and while, as befitting the infant girl. They are bright and girlish playful. They knit together my past history and their present reality: diaries of us both.
